“fetch_mail” error in Postie plugin

How to troubleshoot the “fetch_mail” error and complete your “Post via email” setup with the Postie plugin.

This is how the Error looks like:

“fetch_mail: IMAP – Could not connect to IMAP server imap.gmail.com on port 993. Array ( [0] => A0002 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials (Failure) )”

It happens after you finish setup of the Postie plugin in WordPress and testing the connection.

Here are the steps to address the error and ensure successful connection:

  1. Double-Check Credentials:
    • Meticulously verify that you’ve entered the correct email address and password in the Postie plugin settings. Even a minor typo can cause authentication issues.
    • Re-enter your credentials carefully to eliminate any potential errors.
  2. Enable Less Secure Apps (If Using Gmail):
    • If you’re using Gmail, you might need to enable “Less secure app access” within your Gmail settings:
  3. Check Firewall and Security Restrictions:
    • Review your hosting provider’s firewall and security settings.
    • Ensure they’re not blocking access to IMAP on port 993.
    • If you’re unsure, contact your hosting provider for assistance.
  4. Verify IMAP Access in Email Settings:
    • Confirm that IMAP access is enabled in your email account settings.
    • This option is usually found within the “Mail settings” or “Account settings” section of your email provider’s website.
  5. Test with a Different Email Client:
    • To rule out a problem with Gmail itself, try connecting to your Gmail account using a different email client like Thunderbird or Outlook.
    • If you can connect successfully, the issue might be specific to Postie or your hosting environment.
  6. Clear Plugin Cache and Data:
    • Go to Tools > Postie in your WordPress dashboard.
    • Click the “Clear cache” button to remove any cached data that might be causing conflicts.
  7. Contact Plugin Support:
    • If the issue persists, reach out to the Postie plugin support team for further guidance.
    • They can provide more tailored troubleshooting steps based on your specific setup and configuration.

Once you’ve resolved the connection issue:

  1. Compose a Test Email:
    • Send a test email to the unique email address generated by Postie.
    • Ensure it includes a subject line (which will become the post title) and content for the post body.
  2. Check for New Posts:
    • Navigate to Posts in your WordPress dashboard.
    • The test email should appear as a new draft post.
    • Review the formatting and content to ensure it’s correct.

Additional Tips:

  • Review Plugin Documentation: Refer to the Postie plugin documentation for detailed instructions and troubleshooting steps.
  • Consider Alternative Plugins: If Postie continues to cause issues, explore other “Post via email” plugins like “WP-Mail-SMTP” or “Email Posts.”
  • Explore Manual Configuration: For more control and flexibility, you can manually set up “Post via email” using WordPress filters and functions.

I hope these steps help you successfully set up “Post via email” and start publishing posts via email!
